Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick will host author Brooke Williams, reading from and speaking about his new book “Encountering Dragonfly: Notes on the Practice of Re-enchantment” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Two decades ago, Williams had a powerful dream about a dragonfly that cracked open his world, giving rise to a steady stream of dragonfly encounters in his waking life. Almost as though they had something to tell him. As he has opened himself to the dragonfly’s symbolic, cultural and mytho-poetic meanings, he has come to find them to be his portal to the re-enchantment of the world. The book is about dragonflies, where he encountered them, the varieties of dragonflies that he has met and also about the re-enchantment of the world.

Williams recounts a conversation with author Scott Momaday, who tells him that we are approaching a nick in time, and that to cross that nick we need atonement, saying that “Atonement means living like Dragonfly lived. We must live in a way that acknowledges that the Earth is alive, and not a vast jumble of resources for our use and disposal.”

Williams said that this book tour is really a re-enchantment tour, saying “Let’s figure out how to bring some people into your store, talk to them about dragonflies and re-enchantment, recruit them to the cause and oh, by the way, sell some books.”

Williams has spent the last 40 years advocating for wilderness and writing about his own adventures exploring both the inner and outer worlds. He lives with the writer Terry Tempest Williams and two cats near Moab, Utah.

This event is free, and open to the public. Gulf of Maine Books is located at 134 Maine St.
