A vintage clothing shop in Deep Ellum is ending its time in Dallas.
Nylo Wool, which started about four years ago, will close its doors later this month. It will shift operations to Austin, founder Daniel Brown said in an interview. The shop, housed in about 1,000 square feet, is tucked away on the eastern side of the popular neighborhood.
While Deep Ellum was a great place to establish the business, there are huge opportunities for the business in the state’s capital, Brown said. There’s an active and stronger market there for vintage clothing, and, at the same, he’s also able to keep his full-time job.
“If our shop can make it in Dallas, we can definitely thrive in Austin,” Brown said.

But there’s more. At least part of the reason for the shift was tied to the construction in Deep Ellum, a longstanding concern for businesses there, even if it wasn’t the primary driver, he said.
The infrastructure upgrades — and the effects on shoppers — reduced foot traffic by about 20% at the store, even as the business built up its outreach online.
“This construction in Deep Ellum is not fantastic and hasn’t been super helpful for us,” Brown said. “… There were fewer people driving by because of the road construction and just the accessibility to get to this area. I even noticed it for myself just trying to get to my shop.”
Deep Ellum, one of the older neighborhoods in the city, has thrived with its reputation for off-the-beaten-path retailers, restaurants and active bars. Yet a public works project, and other efforts, have driven complaints over several months, as equipment rumbles around the roads and some streets and sidewalks become hard to access. Some shops have said in the past that the construction has driven down sales.

For Nylo Wool, Deep Ellum had been a particularly great spot in Dallas that’s hard to match. It offers a healthy balance of locals and tourists who can add to strong sales, he said.
“I love being in Deep Ellum,” he said. “If we were going to stay in Dallas, this is the only neighborhood I would want to be in for our shop.”

Nylo Wool specializes in vintage clothing that Brown describes as fitting within the theme of “Americana.” Think workwear, western and denim but also collegiate and other themes. Eras can include the 1990s and maybe the 1940s. Recently, there was a 1980s Western Michigan University T-shirt, for example, along with a 1950s Dickies sanforized work chino.
The shop not only will move but get a rebrand in Austin under the name of Corduroy Road.

“I am bummed that we are getting out of Deep Ellum,” Brown said. “When we decided to come here, we were hoping that more companies or brands that are similar to us — not necessarily vintage … just more similar to our aesthetic, would also follow suit, or, like, would be attracted to Deep Ellum. That just didn’t happen.”
