A black bear has been spotted on homeowners ring doorbell cameras in South Buffalo on Wednesday night.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Homeowners in South Buffalo had an unexpected guest wandering past their homes on Wednesday night.
2 On Your Side received a video from Jessica Michalzak that shows what appears to be a juvenile black bear headed down Marilla Street.
We have reached out to Buffalo Police and the Buffalo Animal Shelter to see if they have received any reports of the bear.
There have been no updated sightings of the bear as of Friday morning.
“I was like shocked and told my wife, hey, this is in front of our house!” said Jim Carrig, who lives on Marilla Street and who was alerted through a text message from his nephew.
“He lives in Hamburg and at first, because it wasn’t a very good video, I asked if it was a bear in his yard? And he said no, it’s in your neighborhood on Marilla Street,” Carrig said.
It may not be entirely surprising that a bear could be in this part of the city, as portions of Marilla Street are surrounded by wide open green spaces, wooded areas, and it’s just a few blocks from South Park
We will continue to keep this story updated as more information becomes available.
The New York State DEC’s website says, “Black bears are an important and natural component of New York’s ecosystem. Whether you live or recreate in the bear country, please help maintain and protect the bear. At the same time, protect yourself and your property by not feeding bears and by reducing bear attractants.”
