Kimbrel, 37, has made just one big league appearance this season, pitching a scoreless inning with the Atlanta Braves. Now, he’ll join the Astros in a postseason race after they lost All-Star closer Josh Hader for the foreseeable future with a left shoulder capsule strain.

Kimbrel is a nine-time All-Star and one-time World Series champion as a member of the 2018 Boston Red Sox team that beat the Los Angeles Dodgers. Across his 16-year career, Kimbrel has played for eight teams — the Braves, San Diego Padres, Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles — sporting a 2.59 ERA with 440 saves over 810.2 innings pitched.

Last year with the Orioles, Kimbrel had a 5.33 ERA over 57 appearances with the Orioles. However, just two seasons ago, Kimbrel was an All-Star, making 71 appearances with the Phillies and sporting a 3.26 ERA.

Kimbrel spent the 2022 season with the Dodgers, where he had a 3.75 ERA over 63 appearances.
