La Junta attempted murder suspect arrested in Colorado Springs

  • August 22, 2025

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A suspect accused of attempted murder out of La Junta was arrested in Colorado Springs on Thursday night, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

According to CSPD, 40-year-old Chezaray Chavez had an active arrest warrant for attempted homicide out of La Junta.

On August 10, the La Junta Police Department said a victim was taken to a metro area hospital with a gunshot wound just before midnight on Carson Avenue. La Junta police identified Chavez as the suspect in the shooting.

Colorado Springs police said tactical units assisted the US Marshals Office (USMS) in attempting to contact Chavez on Gentle Wind Road in east Colorado Springs around 3 p.m.

Once positively identifying the Chavez, police said announcements were made asking the suspect to exit the home and surrender, but Chavez instead barricaded himself and refused to surrender.

Police say a shelter-in-place was then issued at 4:22 p.m. for the area.

CSPD said officers and USMS then made several attempts to de-escalate the situation, and eventually, chemical irritants were deployed into the home in further attempts for Chavez to surrender.

By 7:20 p.m., police said Chavez surrendered and was taken into custody, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted for the area.

Chavez was booked into the El Paso County Jail for attempted first-degree murder.
