Today’s Big Stories
1. Multiple dead, trapped after tour bus crashes on Thruway in Western New York, shuts down highway
Multiple people have died and others are still trapped after a tour bus driving back from Niagara Falls to New York City carrying 52 people rolled over this afternoon on the New York State Thruway outside of Buffalo, New York State Police said.
Police didn’t immediately specify how many fatalities or injuries there were, but said children were on the bus.
2. NYPD detective hurt by friendly fire responding to carjacking, police say
An NYPD detective was unintentionally shot and injured by another officer as police tried to stop a carjacking in Queens this morning, officials said.
The detective, a 12-year veteran of the department, was struck once in the hand and once in the leg as he and other officers tried to stop a man from stealing an Uber driver’s car in Whitestone, Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news briefing.
3. Rockaway Beach surfers rip big currents as hurricane passes offshore
Hurricane Erin, churning offshore today, sent powerful waves and rip currents crashing onto New York City’s beaches, prompting officials to ban swimming.
Beachgoers were still allowed on the sand, but city officials said surf conditions were too dangerous to enter the water. At Rockaway Beach, the warnings didn’t stop surfers, who called the conditions ideal.
4. Mamdani hits Adams on corruption, promises new approach to City Hall
Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani criticized Mayor Eric Adams’ administration today, calling attention to corruption and outlining his policy priorities during a one-on-one interview on “Mornings On 1.”
The conversation came one day after Adams’ longtime confidante and former chief adviser, Ingrid Lewis-Martin, was indicted on charges of accepting more than $75,000 in bribes during her time at City Hall.
5. Waymo to start testing self-driving cars in New York City
Waymo, the self-driving car company backed by Google’s parent company Alphabet, has received its first permit from New York City to begin testing autonomous vehicles on city streets, officials said today.
The company will be allowed to test up to eight vehicles in parts of Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn through late September, with the option to apply to extend the trial, Mayor Eric Adams and city Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a release.
6. ‘Subway Takes’ creator brings indie romance to the big screen
Kareem Rahma, the creator behind the viral “Subway Takes” video series, is taking his adventures from the subway to the silver screen. He co-wrote and stars in the new indie romance “Or Something,” inspired by Richard Linklater’s 1995 film “Before Sunrise.”
The film follows Rahma and Mary Neely, who play two strangers exploring New York City in a single day while debating life and love. The two joined “Mornings On 1” ahead of the premiere tonight at the Quad Cinema to talk about turning subway experiences into a love story.
7. Nature as a classroom: Interns help conserve former city reservoir
NYC H2O has an eco-interns program featuring 16 paid summer interns. The environmental education organization spends two days a week removing invasive species from the Ridgewood Reservoir, now a freshwater pond.
The interns also visit “green” locations like the city’s recycling plant in Brooklyn and the Parks Department’s Native Plant Nursery on Staten Island.
