SAN ANTONIO – The older brother of a woman hit and killed on the Southeast side has inherited a family of three.
33-year-old Jeanette Espitia was killed in a pedestrian crash on SE Military drive Thursday night.
Flowers are now left at the front door of the mother of three’s apartment.
“I love her so much. She was my best friend,” her brother, Jesse Espitia said tearfully.
He said Jeanette was walking with her child to their apartment on military drive. They were getting off the bus, after buying diapers from a nearby Walmart, when they reportedly crossed here at Old Corpus Christi Rd. That’s when they were hit.
“That was the worst thing she could have done, is not use a crosswalk,” Jesse said. “I wasn’t here when that happened. I always tell her ‘I’m going to leave, don’t go outside. Don’t go walking around,’. I always told her it’s not safe. It’s not well lit.”
Jeanette was a mother of three. She was due to give birth to her fourth child next month. She and the unborn baby were pronounced dead at the hospital.
The child walking with her with her is okay.
Jesse and their family were excited to welcome the baby boy; he was going to be named ‘JJ’, after their late brother. Now, the Espitia family is faced with what seems to be a never-ending streak of tragedies.
“It’s been tough for us,” he started. “You know, in the past three years, I lost my mom, my dad, my two brothers, now my sister. I miss them all. I feel so alone.”
Those deaths ranging from one medical condition to another. Now Jesse is adjusting to life as father of three.
“These are my babies now, and I got to watch them,” he said. “I’m the only one that’s left in my family. So, I’m alone and I gotta be strong for them.”
He’s asking the community to take away an important message from his sister’s death.
“Use a crosswalk. Just use the crosswalk,” he urged. “I know it’s just a couple feet down, but use it. I don’t want anybody ending up like my sister.”
There’s no word on whether the driver involved will face any charges. They did stop after the crash.
