Germantown sends a message to Houston, winning 44-23 in heated rivalry matchup

  • August 24, 2025

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – One of the biggest rivalries in Memphis went down on a Saturday night as the Houston Mustangs faced off against the Germantown Red Devils.

The action took place on Germantown’s home turf as the defending state champion, Houston Mustangs, were led by quarterback Canon Day.

Houston would enter the second quarter with a 3-0 lead when Germantown would answer as quarterback Jourdin Shelton located Tre’von McGory for a 20-yard touchdown.

After a two-point conversation, the Red Devils took their first lead of the season, 8-3.

Just a few minutes later, Shelton launched a 52-yard bomb to Laquan Higginbottom to increase the lead to 16-3.

Day would get his team back in the game, finding Ean Chester for a 17-yard score to bring the deficit to 6.

Germantown would continue to pour it on as tacked on another 6 points for the Red Devils with a 35-yard touchdown.

Houston would not be able to get back in the game as Germantown served the Mustangs a 20-piece on the opening night of football and threw in an extra, winning the Battle for Germantown.

Final Score = Germantown, 44, Houston 23
