Hoboken’s youngest residents now have a new place to play with the opening of a modern, inclusive playground at Church Square Park.

The play area, designed for children 5 and younger, represents a “significant upgrade” to one of the city’s historic parks, officials said.

Located in the southwest section of the park along Fourth Street between Park Avenue and Willow Avenue, the playground features ramped play structures, play mounds, magnetic play features, all-user swings, and curved benches.

Modern safety surfacing has also been installed to protect young visitors.

“Seeing our youngest kids already enjoying the new playground at Church Square Park is a reminder of why we invest in public spaces that help bring our community together,” Hoboken Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla said in a statement.

The project, funded partially through the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund, is part of Phase 1 of the Church Square Park Improvements Project.

Additional improvements scheduled for completion this fall include a new lawn area, a noise-reducing landscape buffer near the dog run, and new public restrooms.

The improvements reflect community input gathered through public meetings and surveys as part of the Church Square Park Vision Plan.

Anthony L. Romano, chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, noted the playground’s importance to local families, describing it as “a valued space that has been in need of renovation and state of the art equipment upgrades.”
