Pace Univiersity’s Sands College of Performing Arts has added some Broadway caliber to its faculty roster: Tony nominee L Morgan Lee, performer Shonica Gooden, and stage manager Matthew Stern. All have been hired as clinical assistant professors, with Lee in musical theatre, Gooden in commercial dance, and Stern in stage management. Stern will also become the stage management program’s head.
“These extraordinary educators bring unparalleled professional experience and a passion for nurturing emerging talent,” says Sands College Dean Jennifer Holmes in a statement. “Their artistry, leadership, and commitment to students will further elevate the exceptional training we offer here at Sands.”
The appointments come as Sands is readying to open a new performing arts center at One Pace Plaza East, a space that is expected to open next fall.
Lee was Tony nominated for her performance in A Strange Loop, and has also acted in The Danish Girl, A Complicated Woman, Fiorello!, and All Shook Up. As a director, Lee is at the helm of the upcoming Beyond the Binary benefit concert of The Drowsy Chaperone, set for October 20 at Carnegie Hall.
Gooden’s Broadway credits include Bring It On: The Musical, Cinderella, Cats, and Hamilton.
Stern’s prolific Broadway stage management career (credited as Matthew Aaron Stern) dates back to the 1994 revival of Grease, later including work on Broadway’s Play On!, The Full Monty, Enchanted April, Wicked, Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, Fiddler on the Roof, The Little Mermaid, Baby It’s You, An Evening With Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin, Death of a Salesman, Hands on a Hardbody, On the Town, Side Show, Doctor Zhivago, and Finding Neverland.
