STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New Yorkers planning Labor Day weekend activities can expect comfortable temperatures and low humidity, creating ideal conditions for outdoor activities following a summer of intense heat, according to AccuWeather.
The weekend forecast shows a dramatic improvement after some potential rainfall on Friday. “There’s a possibility of a few showers on Friday, potentially extending into Friday night,” explained Tom Kines, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. “This is associated with a cold front moving east, followed by a large area of high pressure from Canada.”
This high-pressure system is expected to transform the city’s weather for the three-day weekend. “High pressure is usually associated with some very nice weather. And that’ll be the case at least for most of the holiday weekend,” Kines indicated. “The air mass from Canada is expected to be clear of haze or smoke, as many of the fires there have been extinguished, significantly improving air quality compared to early summer.”
Saturday and Sunday are expected to feature abundant sunshine with temperatures slightly below seasonal averages.
“Saturday and Sunday should be quite a bit of sunshine. Both days afternoon temperatures, mid to upper 70s, a little cooler than what it should be at that time of year, but nothing dramatic,” according to Kines. Typically, early September temperatures in New York City hover around the lower 80s, he noted.

The combination of moderate temperatures and low humidity is anticipated to create great weather for outdoor activities. Kines described the forecast as ideal, citing temperatures in the 70s and low humidity. The positive weather outlook extends to Monday as well, with Kines predicting that the high-pressure system will remain in place.
“If current predictions hold, that area of high pressure, which will give us great weather on Saturday and Sunday, will hold up into Monday,” he stated. “There should still be a fair amount of sunshine on Monday, perhaps a little bit warmer. Temperatures ought to get up into the lower 80s.”
While there is potential for moisture to move in from the south later next week, forecasters believe this precipitation will likely hold off until Tuesday or Wednesday, after the Labor Day weekend comes to an end.
Kines emphasized the quality of the upcoming conditions, rating the weekend fairly high on a scale of one to 10.
“On a scale of one to 10, you got to figure it’s going to be an eight or a nine this weekend coming up,” Kines said. “The days ought to be comfortable. The nights will be good for sleeping. It looks like ideal weather coming up for any outdoor activities.”
The favorable weather is particularly welcome news for residents of Staten Island, known for its parks and outdoor spaces.
The forecast represents a welcomed change from earlier summer conditions.
“All that heat and humidity that we dealt with earlier in the summer, we won’t have to deal with that anytime soon and especially over the upcoming weekend,” Kines assured. “If you’re one of those going to the beaches, you might want a little bit warmer than that.”
