SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Expenses can add up as students head back to school.
Financial expert and Ramsey Show cohost, Rachel Cruze, said the time to be proactive is now.
According to Capital One, the average household budgeted $874.68 for back-to-school shopping in 2024.

Cruz said it’s important to be mindful of spending during the back-to-school rush.
“Just be intentional with that, and if you find yourself in a situation that feels like a lot, do a budget and prioritize your needs versus wants,” Cruze said.
As the seasons change in Utah, Cruze advised taking things one month at a time.
“You want a new budget every single month,” she said.
When it comes to shopping for lunches, Cruze recommended choosing less expensive grocery stores and avoiding prepackaged snacks.
Extracurricular activities also cost time and money.
“’Keeping up with the Joneses’ is huge in parenting where other families are comparing,” Cruze said. “Don’t do that.”
She said instead, keep it simple by prioritizing your family’s needs and your budget. She said adding space in quality time also adds space to your budget.
“If you have the money and you want to spend your time there and that’s what your family values, that’s great, but again, being wise about that and your financial situation,” Cruze said.
