SAN ANTONIO, Tx — A vigil was held on Tuesday night remembering a woman who was killed while crossing the road with a toddler on the Southeast Side.

33-year-old Jeanette Espitia was struck by vehicle after she stepped off the city bus Thursday leaving behind three children and a grieving family.

Espitia was struck by a drive on Southeast Military Drive and Old Corpus Christi Highway. She was crossing the road with her one-year-old when the accident happened. Her daughter was not injured. Witnesses say Jeannette pushed her daughter to safety before the car hit her. Her husband Efrain Ramirez says she was eight months pregnant with their unborn child who would’ve been named Jay-Jay.

“I didn’t really believe it,” Ramirez, said. “I kept calling and texting her like please answer the phone. Please don’t let this be real. She never answered me back. I had just finished talking to her before she got on the bus.”

The driver who hit Espitia stopped to help and has not been charged. Espitia’s family says funeral arrangements will be announced at another time.
