Every rose has its thorns, and Naomi Osaka is ready to jab her U.S. Open competition out of the way.

The 2025 Floral Queen, Osaka breezed past Greet Minnen 6-3, 6-4 in her opening-round match Tuesday night at Louis Armstrong Stadium, after the two-time Open winner debuted a sparkly red kit that completed a trio of Nike flower-themed Grand Slam outfits.

It took just an hour and 23 minutes, and Osaka was steadfast in the performance that kicked off her 10th appearance at the star-studded event.

“Honestly, I could have had a better attitude, like I was just very stressed,” she said. “It was the first round, and this tournament means a lot to me, so I really wanted to win. But I just wish I thought more about the process rather than the result. But I’m glad I was able to win.”

Osaka, who had the crowd with her from the start, put forth a strong first set before grinding out the victory in the second.

The 37-minute first set saw Osaka win all three of the breakpoints she earned. Playing with conviction and assurance, the 27-year-old also blasted three aces on the way to finishing with seven on the match.

Considering the U.S. Open has been her most successful Grand Slam tournament, Minnen played a much tighter second set and didn’t let Osaka get more than a two-game lead through the first eight.

Osaka then powered ahead, picking up eight of the next 10 points to draw Hailey Baptiste in the second round Thursday.

Coming to the U.S. Open with some momentum, after a strong summer spilled into falling two sets short of the Canadian Open title earlier this month, Osaka is looking to repeat her 2020 magic in Flushing.

Her new coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski, is said to have had a profound impact on Osaka since the two started working together in July. That will be put to the test against a stronger opponent in Baptiste.

“I think it’s also going to be tough because she’s American,” Osaka said.

Osaka’s entrance under the Louis Armstrong lights was a glittering scene. Everything sparkled from the rose clips in her hair, the red Beats headphones on her head and the bedazzled Labubu charm named after Billie Jean King hanging from her bag. The roses were just the latest to blossom on Osaka, who donned sunflowers at the Australian Open and cherry blossoms at the French Open.

“I designed this outfit a while ago,” she said after the match. “We tried it on, honestly, last year, and it was really elaborate because the crystals are really hard to do on a performance outfit. I just thought it would be fun to do in New York under the lights. I’m glad that my first match was a night match because this outfit was really fun to play.”
