LOWER MERION TWP., Pa. (WPVI) — A Merion Station resident says she feels unsafe in her own home after someone walked onto her property and stole a sign expressing support for Israel.
Sue Kane said the incident occurred around 8:40 a.m. last Tuesday on Heath Road. A neighbor witnessed the theft and took a photo of the suspect, which Kane later shared on Facebook. She also contacted Lower Merion police.
“I’m a big supporter of Israel, I’ve been there many times, my son served in the IDF,” Kane said.
Lower Merion Police Superintendent Andy Block said the social media post prompted another resident in the Bala Cynwyd section of the township to report a similar incident that occurred on May 19. That resident also provided photos of the suspect, which investigators believe depict the same individual.
“Somebody out there knows who this individual is,” Block said.
Police said the suspect could face charges, including criminal trespassing and theft. They also described the incidents as antisemitic.
“Listen, in the United States, you have a First Amendment right to support the causes that you want to support,” Kane said. “I consider this a hate crime.”
Authorities are asking anyone who may have experienced similar thefts to come forward. Police said they will investigate all reports and share them with the Anti-Defamation League, which tracks antisemitic incidents.
