Oliver Tarvet grew up in England. So for the University of San Diego tennis player to make the main draw at Wimbledon is the stuff of dreams.
“A lot of emotions, but the main one is happiness,” Tarvet said. “It’s a lot of work that goes into it, getting to where I am today. A lot of people put in work to help me get this far. The last year, two years… just a lot of emotion. So thankful.. Just enjoying the moment. It doesn’t happen too often so it’s important to love it.”
Tarvet is a reigning All-American at USD and the team’s No. 1 singles player. He defeated Alexander Blockx in four sets to advance to the main draw in one of his best efforts ever. Tarvet served up five aces, hit 57% of his first serves and seven of eight break points in the biggest victory of his career.
Tarvet grew up 23 miles from the famous grounds at Wimbledon and now will get to play there. Draws will be released this weekend.
Tarvet is world No. 719 and is the lowest-ranked Brit to make the main draw since 2017 after defeating No. 124, No. 126 and No. 210 in qualifying matches.
“Ever since I was a kid, it’s always been a big dream of mine,” Tarvet said. “Growing up in Britain it’s obviously something I always wanted to do coming from here, watching all those great players. It’s a dream come true. Just really, really happy to be a part of it.”
Also in the singles draw is former USD tennis player August Holmgren of Denmark. The 27-year old Holmgren is 7-4 on the ATP and ranked 187 in the world and has previously qualified for the French and Australian opens.
“Incredible achievement,” USD coach Ryan Keckley said. “ These young men to qualify for the most prestigious tournament in the world.”
Coronado native in doubles draw
Coronado native Ryan Seggerman is into his first Wimbledon doubles draw with partner Matthew Romios of Australia.
Seggerman has previously played in the French Open and the Australian Open making him one of the most accomplished San Diego tennis players in history.
Seggerman and Romios recently defeated Alexander Erler and Constatin Frantzen to win the Emilia-Romagna Tennis Cup.
“We are so proud of him,” Seggerman’s mother Pam said. “He’s worked so hard to get this far. Wimbledon is a dream come true.”
