Joao Fonseca was unable to live up to big hopes at the US Open this year after suffering a second round exit.
Fonseca is predicted to be a future Grand Slam champion, and actually won the junior US Open event in 2023.
The 19-year-old has shown signs of his big potential this year, with Fonseca winning the Argentina Open back in February.
However, Fonseca has been unable to show this sort of form at the US Open this year after suffering an early exit.

Fonseca made his debut appearance in the main draw of the US Open this year, and picked up an impressive win in his first round match over Miomir Kecmanovic.
However, the Brazilian faced a step up in competition in the second round against 21st seed Tomas Machac, which proved to be too much for Fonseca.
Fonseca was beaten by Machac, 7-6(4) 6-2 6-3, and shortly after his defeat he took to social media to reflect.
He wrote on Instagram, “Tough match today, with lessons and experiences I’ll carry into the next matches. Thank you, @usopen, and onward to more.”
Joao Fonseca’s Grand Slam Results in 2025
Fonseca has enjoyed a dramatic rise up the ATP rankings in 2025, beginning the season ranked at world number 145 to now being exactly 100 places higher at world number 45.
This year has seen Fonseca make his main draw debut at all four major tournaments to varying degrees of success.
Fonseca stunned Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open in his first ever Grand Slam main draw match, but he has been unable to recreate that sort of performance at a major since then.
Perhaps being a victim of his own success, Fonseca has not quite been able to live up to expectations, but his age means he has a lot of time to do just that.
It is unclear as to exactly what is next for Fonseca, as he is currently not entered into any ATP tournament where the entry list has already been released.
