HOUSTON – With Labor Day weekend marking the unofficial end of summer, Houston-area law enforcement agencies are teaming up once again to keep impaired drivers off the roads.
A multi-agency “No Refusal” initiative began Friday and will run through Monday night, targeting drunk drivers during one of the deadliest holiday weekends of the year.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reports that a crash involving an impaired driver occurs every 23 minutes in the state. Last Labor Day weekend, 10 people were killed and 36 others were seriously injured in DWI-related crashes.
Officials say the Gulf Freeway remains a particular concern, with more drunk driving deaths there than on any other freeway in Houston.
In Fort Bend County, attorneys from the District Attorney’s Office will be on call to draft search warrants for suspected drunk drivers who refuse breath or blood tests. Local judges will be available to sign the warrants, and medical staff will be standing by to draw blood samples.
Community leaders urged drivers to plan ahead before celebrating—whether by designating a sober driver, using a rideshare service, or arranging alternate transportation. They also encouraged friends to step in if someone tries to drive impaired.
“I always say, if you’re going to drink, don’t drive,” said Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen.
TxDOT is also promoting its “Drive Sober. No Regrets.” campaign throughout the holiday weekend to remind drivers that one decision could save a life.
