JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s soccer team fell to the Jacksonville (JU) Dolphins 2-0 Sunday at Southern Oak Stadium.
The Vaqueros (0-2) came out with a defensive mindset in the early going but the Dolphins (2-2) secured the first goal of the match in the 19th minute as Felix Kogler secured a cross and put it in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Matias Tobon extended the Dolphins lead to 2-0 in the 34th minute.
The Vaqueros tightened the screws defensively, not allowing any goals for the final 55 minutes of action. Senior Alexis Gonzalez finished the match with a season-high six saves, including a diving stop from a free kick just outside the box.
UTRGV was out shot 10 to 6 and 8 to 2 on goal.
Up next, UTRGV will host Oral Roberts in their home opener on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
