STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Monday is Labor Day, a federal holiday observed on the first Monday of September each year to honor the social and economic contributions of American workers.

It also marks the unofficial end of summer, and while many retail stores have sales and remain open, banks and post offices generally close.

Here’s a look at how the holiday affects beaches, pools, sanitation, transportation and other services.

Beaches and pools:

New York City beaches are open through Sept. 7.

During beach season, lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections, which are marked with signs and/or red flags.

Gateway National Recreation Area at Great Kills will have lifeguards on duty until 6 p.m.

NYC’s free outdoor public pools are scheduled to remain open daily until Sept. 7, with typical hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., though individual schedules and pool-cleaning breaks may vary.

Sanitation:

There will be no trash collection on Labor Day and, according to the Department of Sanitation, residents may experience collection delays as the department works to pick up the backlog of material.

Residents of the five boroughs who normally put their trash, compost, or recycling out for collection on Sunday evening for Monday pickup should instead put items out Monday evening for collection starting on Tuesday, Sept. 2, according to the city.
