NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Summer break is nearly over for New York City students.
Public school students will return to their classrooms on September 4.
NYC Public Schools hiring: Over 100 positions remain open
This year brings some change to the city’s public school system. On Sept. 4, seven new public schools will open their doors in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx.
For the first time ever, students will be forced to unplug during school hours, thanks to a statewide bell-to-bell phone ban. Students from kindergarten to twelfth grade are now required to keep their personal electronics “stored during the entire school day,” according to school officials.
Students will still be able to use school-issued devices like laptops and Chromebooks. Each school will create its own plans for enforcement and consequences.
Kids’ first break comes at the end of September for Rosh Hashanah. Winter break will be from Dec. 24 to Jan. 2, 2026, and the last day of school will be on June 26, 2026. To see the full 2025-2026 school year calendar, click here.
