PHOENIX – Two police officers and a suspect were hospitalized after a shooting in Phoenix on Tuesday, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the area of 17th Avenue and Tonto Street, about a mile south of the Arizona Capitol, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The department said officers from its Special Assignment Unit were at an apartment complex in the area serving a search warrant for an unrelated investigation.

New details in shooting involving Phoenix Police officers

Police said that as officers knocked on the door of an apartment, someone inside the apartment began shooting at them. The officers then shot back.

Two officers were injured and taken to the hospital. The injuries to both officers are not considered to be life-threatening, according to Phoenix police.

The department added that three suspects inside the apartment were detained and that one of those suspects was hospitalized with a life-threatening injury.

All of the injuries were the result of the shooting, but police did not say if the officers or suspects had been shot or if they were injured by shrapnel.

Phoenix police said that 17th Avenue was closed between Hadley and Tonto streets due to the investigation.

No other details about the shooting were released.

Phoenix Police chief meets with officers injured in shooting

Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano said he went to the hospital on Tuesday to meet with the two injured officers, who are in good spirits.

However, he said that scenes like Tuesday’s shooting are tough for him.

“You can prepare yourself as much as you want for when that phone rings… but when you’re the chief and you get that call that an officer’s been injured, it’s personal,” Giordano said during a press conference Tuesday afternoon. “I feel responsible for all the men and women that are doing this job. They do a dangerous job every day, day in, day out… They do it on behalf of the residents of the city of Phoenix and they’re not looking for praise or looking for thanks. They do it to make you safe.”

It was the second shooting involving Phoenix police over a three-day period. On Sunday, officers shot and killed a suspect who allegedly pulled a knife near 20th Street and Southern Avenue.
