Shannon Shelmire Wynne, a Highland Park resident who works in restaurant design and operations, wants you to know more about the Dallas 24 Hour Club and its work helping addicts get clean.
“If you want to tour the facility in hopes of finding a successful and effective program that helps the city of Dallas, please come let us show you the work we are doing,” he said.
What kind of work does it do?
Dallas 24 Hour Club is a place for anyone who wants to get clean, who is addicted to alcohol or drugs, and who does not have the resources nor family support to house themselves.
How did you get involved with this nonprofit?
When I first got sober myself, some 36 years ago, The 24 Hour Club was a place many sponsors took their sponsees to witness how bad it can get on the street. That AA group was made up of hard-core users who worked very hard to get clean and stay clean. I had been on the board of The Bridge for years, and when I rolled off, I decided The 24’s dedication to helping folks get and stay sober was a calling I wanted to pursue.
Why do you support it today?
It has come a long way since then, and with the help of many dedicated Dallasites, it is now the go-to for many, both men and women, to get and stay sober. The facility has been completely rebuilt, and the housing expanded. It requires its residents to get and hold a job, attend meetings, get regular testing, and be accountable. The rewards are really beautiful, and the success rate is impressive.
