Today’s Big Stories
1. Sources: Mayor Adams heading to DC next week to plot political future with Trump aides
Mayor Eric Adams is set to head to Washington, D.C. next week for a meeting with aides to President Donald Trump to discuss his political future, sources told NY1.
The news of the highly unusual gathering comes in the wake of a New York Times report that Trump aides are considering offering Adams the ambassadorship to Saudi Arabia in return for him dropping his reelection campaign. A source later confirmed to NY1 that the ambassadorship could be in play.
2. Hochul signs order to expand COVID vaccine access in New York amid federal limits
Gov. Kathy Hochul today signed an executive order aimed at preserving access to COVID-19 vaccines in New York, citing what she described as threats to immunization from the Trump administration.
The order, in effect for 30 days, allows pharmacists to prescribe and administer the updated 2025-26 COVID shot to New Yorkers as young as age 3. It follows recent federal actions that restricted pharmacy access to vaccines for children, pregnant people and adults under 65 without health conditions.
3. New report gives more than half of all city bus lines D or F grades
A new analysis says congestion pricing is helping buses move more reliably in Manhattan — but citywide, service is still falling short.
The report from New York City Comptroller Brad Lander shows bus reliability improved by more than 9 percentage points on the 106 lines that run through the congestion zone. Express buses saw the biggest gains in on-time performance, with reliability jumping from 58% to 69%.
But outside the toll zone, buses aren’t seeing the same improvements.
4. Deputy mayor defends Long Island City rezoning as housing plan advances
Deputy Mayor Adolfo Carrión Jr. today joined “Mornings on 1” to defend a sweeping plan to rezone parts of Long Island City, saying it is a step needed to confront New York City’s deepening housing crisis.
The proposal, approved by the City Planning Commission earlier this week, would allow for the construction of nearly 15,000 apartments, about 3 million square feet of commercial space and around 300,000 square feet of community space along the Queens waterfront.
5. Podcast: The political dance: Trump, Adams and the future of New York
This week, there were two separate reports that Trump administration officials are considering offering Mayor Eric Adams a job if he drops his reelection bid, possibly helping Andrew Cuomo against Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani in the mayoral race.
But after Mamdani soundly defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary, would such a move even work? NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross and political reporters Bobby Cuza and Kelly Mena break down a chaotic week in the mayor’s race on the “Off Topic/On Politics” podcast.
6. Frank DiLella’s theater picks: ‘Cabaret,’ ‘Saturday Church’ and more
With the many entertainment choices New York City has to offer, it can be difficult to make a choice.
“On Stage” host Frank DiLella has curated a list of “must-see” shows this week, inlcuding “Cabaret,” “The Brothers Size” and others.
