Police were investigating a hit-and-run that left a man in a wheelchair injured on Sept. 5 in Phoenix, according to a police spokesperson.

About 11 p.m., officers were called to the area of 35th and Northern avenues after a man in the roadway was struck by a car, Sgt. Jennifer Zak of the Phoenix Police Department said.

Police found the man, who had been in a wheelchair at the time of the crash, with serious but survivable injuries, according to Zak.

The driver of the vehicle left before authorities arrived, according to Zak.

It was not immediately clear whether the man in the wheelchair was in a crosswalk or how the hit-and-run driver struck him. Zak said it was unknown whether impairment played a role.

An investigation into the crash remained ongoing.
