San Diego State travels to Martin Stadium as a slim underdog on Saturday after Jimmy Rogers edged his way to the narrowest of wins in his debut as Washington State head coach. The Cougars required a last-second field goal to edge out Idaho 13-10 last weekend and will be desperate to deliver an improved home display against their future Pac-12 opponents.
It was just last October that these two teams met for the first time in 13 years, and the Cougars pulled a frantic fourth-quarter finish out of the fire to triumph 29-26. John Mateer threw two touchdown passes as Washington State scored the final 15 points of the game to rescue the win, though he has since transferred to Oklahoma.
Jaxon Potter is the new name in the pocket for the Cougars after Rogers kept his selection close to his chest coming into the new season. And the sophomore delivered an efficient performance against Idaho, completing 23 of 30 passes for 208 yards and one touchdown.
Washington State’s defense stood up against Idaho, holding the visitors to just 97 offensive yards, although its own running game was a letdown. The same couldn’t be said for San Diego State last week after Lucky Sutton rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns, which could be a difference-maker at Martin Stadium.
