The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center officially opened, and honestly, this new guest experience is about to make Liberty Station the cultural destination we didn’t know we needed.
After eight years and $43.5 million, Cygnet Theatre and Arts District Liberty Station just transformed a 1942 Navy recreation center into what’s basically San Diego’s newest crown jewel for live performance.
Two Theaters, Endless Possibilities
The Joan houses two state-of-the-art performance spaces that are going to change how we think about theater in San Diego. The Joseph Clayes III Theater (The Clayes) seats over 280 people in a proscenium-style setup, while the Dorothea Laub Studio Theater (The Dottie) offers a more intimate 150-seat experience.
Both have flexible seating configurations, which means every show can feel completely different depending on how they set it up.
What’s really cool is that they built this thing right under the airport flight path, so they had to get creative with acoustics. We’re talking specially engineered roofs, high-performance sound-dampening panels, HVAC shock absorbers, and noiseless door fixtures.
When you’re that committed to perfect sound in a challenging location, you know the experience is going to be worth it.
History Gets the Respect It Deserves
Building 178 was originally the Navy recreation center back in 1942 – complete with bowling alley and dance hall. Instead of just gutting it, they thoughtfully preserved the historical elements while creating space for bold artistic innovation.
The San Diego Architectural Foundation gave them an “Orchid” award for Historic Preservation, which basically means they nailed the balance between honoring the past and building for the future.
They restored the enclosed colonnades, arcades, and shuttered windows, plus reconstructed the entire north portion to create the basement-level main stage. Every detail respects the building’s military history while transforming it into this vibrant space for creativity and community connection.
Cygnet’s Big Inaugural Season
Cygnet Theatre kicks off their 21st season at The Joan with their largest production ever – James Goldman’s and Stephen Sondheim’s “Follies.” Their inaugural season runs through July 2026 with four musicals and two plays.
The Clayes will host “Follies,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Somewhere Over the Border,” and “The SpongeBob Musical,” while The Dottie gets “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” “Cygnet’s a Magical Holiday: Christmas at The Joan,” and “The Lehman Trilogy.”
But here’s what makes The Joan special – it’s not just Cygnet’s home. Other arts organizations get to use the space too. Malashock Dance, San Diego Women’s Chorus, Write Out Loud, and more are already on the calendar. They’re expecting over 50,000 guests annually, which means this place is going to be busy in the best possible way.
More Than Just a Theater
The Joan comes with all the behind-the-scenes amenities that make great theater possible – two green rooms, spacious dressing rooms, a full costume shop, dedicated rehearsal space, and top-tier acoustic elements.
For audiences, there are two indoor lobbies (one doubles as an art gallery), refreshment areas, an outdoor lobby space, and industry-leading ADA accessibility.
The location at Liberty Station means you can grab dinner, do some shopping, or check out other cultural attractions before or after shows. It’s the kind of setup that turns a night at the theater into a whole evening out.
Community Impact That Actually Matters
Beyond just bringing world-class performances to San Diego, Cygnet and Arts District Liberty Station are using The Joan to create jobs and training programs for college students and emerging artists. They’re also partnering with military members and students throughout the region to increase arts engagement in under-resourced communities.
Sean Murray, Cygnet’s Artistic Director, put it perfectly: “This state-of-the-art venue gives us the opportunity to dream bigger and create bolder.” That’s exactly what San Diego’s arts scene needed.
