HOUSTON – Drivers should prepare for major detours this weekend as crews perform emergency repairs on the Houston Avenue bridge.
The closures are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, and last through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15.
Closures include the following:
I-10 Katy Freeway eastbound from Shepherd/Durham to Houston Avenue
Drivers will be detoured to the I-10 eastbound frontage road, then directed through a series of connectors using I-610 and I-45 to return to I-10 eastbound.
I-10 Katy Freeway eastbound from Antoine Drive to Shepherd Drive
Four left lanes will be closed. A single lane will remain open for local traffic only.
Motorists are advised to use the I-610 West Loop northbound to I-610 North Loop eastbound, then I-45 southbound to rejoin I-10 eastbound.
I-610 West Loop northbound and southbound connector ramps to I-10 Katy Freeway eastbound
Drivers will detour onto I-10 westbound, exit at Chimney Rock, make a U-turn, and continue eastbound on I-10.
From there, motorists can reconnect to I-610 and I-45 southbound to rejoin I-10.
Houston Avenue bridge, northbound and southbound at I-10 Katy Freeway
Northbound detour: Right on Hogan Street, left on N. Main Street, left on Quitman Street, right on Houston Avenue.
Southbound detour: Left on Quitman Street, right on N. Fulton Street, right on Hogan Street, left on Houston Avenue.
The Houston Avenue bridge is scheduled for demolition in early 2027 as part of the I-10 White Oak Bayou elevation project. It will be rebuilt to run under I-10.
TxDOT is urging drivers to follow posted detours, allow for extra travel time, and use caution while traveling through the area.
