With the 2025–26 NBA season just over a month away, most teams are finalizing their rosters for training camps.
While several notable free agents such as Jonathan Kuminga, Russell Westbrook, Ben Simmons, and Al Horford remain unsigned, one big name has now officially left the NBA market.
On Wednesday, Trey Lyles, a 10-year NBA veteran who last played for the Sacramento Kings, signed a one-year contract with Spanish giants Real Madrid.
A New Chapter in Europe
According to Encestando, Lyles’ deal with the reigning Spanish champions is worth $3.2 million gross. He joins a talent-packed squad coached by Sergio Scariolo, featuring stars like Facundo Campazzo, Sergio Llull, Mario Hezonja, Usman Garuba, Gabriel Deck, Walter Tavares, and rising Spanish prospect Izan Almansa.
Real Madrid, a powerhouse in both the Liga ACB and the EuroLeague, has long been a proving ground for international talent, with alumni including Luka Doncic and Sergio Rodríguez.
Lyles’ NBA Journey
Lyles, now 29, brings significant NBA experience with him to Europe. He has played 662 career games across stints with the Utah Jazz, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, and Sacramento Kings.
Drafted 12th overall in 2015 by Utah, Lyles was selected just ahead of his former Kentucky teammate Devin Booker. Over his career, he developed a reputation as a versatile forward capable of stretching the floor and providing valuable minutes off the bench.
Last season with the Kings, he averaged 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
International Impact
Lyles also recently represented Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the national team reached the quarterfinals. His international experience adds further value to Real Madrid, who will be aiming to extend their dominance in Europe both domestically and in the EuroLeague.
