Thursday marks 24 years since the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, and the annual commemoration ceremony will bring large crowds and lots of traffic around the city.

The start of New York Fashion Week, a presidential appearance at a New York Yankees game, and the Feast of San Gennaro will likely bring gridlock to much of Manhattan throughout the day.

The annual 9/11 commemoration ceremony will start at 8:30 a.m., as family members of victims gather at Memorial Plaza to read aloud the names of each person who died in the terrorist attack. They also read out the names of those killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

There will be six moments of silence throughout the event to acknowledge when the Twin Towers were struck and fell, the time of the attack on the Pentagon, and the moment when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

NYPD officials said the department will be on heightened alert during the ceremony, and there will be a number of street closures around the Financial District through the morning.

  • Areas bounded by Barclay Street in the north; Rector Street in the south; Broadway in the east; and West Street in the west will be closed
  • Liberty Street will be closed between West Street and South End Avenue
  • Albany Street will be closed between West Street and South End Avenue
  • Subways and buses will skip World Trade Center stops through the morning

The official commemoration ends at 1 p.m. The ceremony can be streamed on local news stations as well as on the 9/11 Memorial and Museum website.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the 9/11 ceremony at the Pentagon in Virginia, before heading to the Bronx at night to watch game two of the Yankees versus the Detroit Tigers. The NYPD said there will be more traffic in the area than usual for a normal game day.

Thursday also marks the start of New York Fashion Week, which means much of SoHo will be a nightmare for drivers, especially around Varick Street.

  • All of West Broadway closed between Sixth Avenue and Beach Street
  • Varick Street closed between Laight Street and Beach Street
  • Sixth Avenue closed between Laight Street and West Broadway

And if that wasn’t enough of a headache for drivers, the Feast of San Gennaro also kicks off on Thursday and runs through Sept. 21. The event will almost entirely close Little Italy off to car traffic. Here’s a brief list of road closures:

  • Mott Street between Canal Street and East Houston Street
  • Mulberry Street between Canal Street and East Houston Street
  • Baxter Street between Canal Street and Grand Street
  • Centre Market Place between Grand Street and Broome Street
  • Centre Street between Canal Street and Broome Street

A more detailed list of roads affected by the 9/11 Memorial and other events is available from the Department of Transportation.

This story has been updated to reflect that Vice President J.D. Vance was not in attendance at the ceremony.
