On the eve of the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the Intrepid Museum in New York City transformed into a long assembly line.

Thousands of volunteers — students, corporate teams and families — came together to pack more than 2 million meals for local food banks as part of the Sept. 11 National Day of Service. The initiative, cofounded by Jay Winuk in honor of his brother Glenn, a volunteer firefighter who died in the South Tower, has grown into the largest day of service in the US. Organizers say each meal represents not only food but a message of hope and unity.
