Neighborhood events for today, September 11
This year marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11 and as in other years the commemoration ceremony will take place on the Memorial plaza and focus on an in-person reading of the names by family members. The plaza is only open to invited guests. The program will commence at 8:30 a.m., and the first moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m. Families can access the plaza beginning at 7:30 a.m., and the commemoration is expected to conclude at approximately 1:00 p.m.
TRIBUTE IN LIGHT
From dusk today until dawn on September 12, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum will host its annual commemorative art installation – Tribute in Light. The iconic tribute was first presented six months after 9/11 even while recovery and relief efforts at Ground Zero were still underway. Read more about the operation here.
ST. PAUL’S CHAPEL WILL RING BELL OF HOPE
St. Paul’s Chapel, part of the Episcopal Parish of Trinity Church Wall Street, will offer prayers and reflections in remembrance of the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and United Flight 93 on this 22nd anniversary of 9/11. At precisely 8:46 AM, when the first plane crashed into 1 WTC (North Tower), the chapel will ring the Bell of Hope in a pattern of “four fives” (four sets of five rings), the traditional firefighters’ salute to the fallen. The chapel and churchyard are open to the public daily from 8:30a to 6p.
FREE ADMISSION ON FIRST SUNDAYS AT THE MUSEUM
The 9/11 Memorial Museum changed its free hours to New Yorkers to the first Sunday of each month through this year. See more information here.
CLEANING THE POOLS AT THE MEMORIAL
