San Diego police on Thursday night were still looking for two men in connection with a deadly shooting in Ocean Beach.

Investigators say a confrontation around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on Newport Street, in the parking lot next to popular burger joint Hodad’s, led to the shooting.

Neighbors heard two quick shots. Witnesses then saw the first suspect, and according to security camera footage, the second suspect exactly 10 seconds behind.

The image is blurred, but you can make out the dark shirt and blue jeans on the first man passing the camera. The second appears to be wearing a light sweatshirt and jeans.

“I heard the helicopters circling for about 30 to 45 minutes,” neighbor Sebastian Fowler said. “They said they were looking for a suspect.”

Fowler lives a couple blocks away. He did not hear the shots but did hear the police sirens and helicopter in pursuit of the suspects.

San Diego police are searching for two men wanted after a deadly shooting in Ocean Beach. NBC 7’s Jeanette Quezada has the details.

Police are not without leads. Not only did the shooting happen next to one of the most recognized burger joints in San Diego but also in a parking lot, which is a popular gathering spot around midnight.

“Typically, you got like a DJ or some guy with a guitar or some people eating burgers out in the lot. It’s really not like a place of violence,” Fowler said.

Investigators say the man killed was involved in some kind of confrontation with two other men. The victim punched one of them, and the second man did the shooting.

Unbeknownst to the suspects, when they ran down the north alley, they ran into what you might call a traffic jam of security cameras. The bars, shops and restaurants all the way to the ocean have security cameras because they have parking in the back of their buildings. Police have some, if not all, of those videos.

For now, police say there have been no arrests. It’s having a chilling effect on the Ocean Beach community.

“What if a shooter comes into our building and hurts us,” neighbor Edwardo Alvarez said.  “We have to look after ourselves at this point.”

“A little scary, but we just need to find the person responsible,“ neighbor Christian Windsor said.

While police don’t identify this as a random shooting, it is no more comforting when added to the recent violent incidents nationwide.

“[On Wednesday], we had a shooting in Colorado. Charlie Kirk got shot. We had a shooting here in Ocean Beach. Things are kind of just going off the rails,” Fowler said.

Police describe the suspects only as men in their 20s or 30s.
