FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth City Council member Elizabeth Beck is facing scrutiny after a social media post surfaced using an old quote from conservative activist Charlie Kirk following his fatal shooting.

Beck posted, and then purportedly removed, a post that re-circulated a 2023 Newsweek article. The article included a quote from Kirk. He said gun deaths were “unfortunately” a cost worth bearing to defend Second Amendment rights, and the post placed the word “unfortunate” over Kirk’s image.

The post was originally reported by the Houston Chronicle.

On Thursday, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker posted on X calling for elected officials and community leaders to be “held to the highest standard.” Parker’s post seemed to call out Beck without formally mentioning the council member.

“Yesterday we saw the worst example of this by one of my fellow Council Members, essentially condoning violence because of someone’s political views. It is very clear that the killing of Charlie Kirk was a political assassination, and there is no justification for evil,” the post reads.

Since 2021, Beck has been a member of the Fort Worth City Council.

Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk died after he was shot on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University.

The event hosted by Turning Point at the Sorensen Center on campus was billed as the first stop on Kirk’s “American Comeback Tour.”

The event generated a polarizing campus reaction. An online petition calling for university administrators to bar Kirk from appearing received nearly 1,000 signatures. The university issued a statement last week citing First Amendment rights and affirming its “commitment to free speech, intellectual inquiry and constructive dialogue.”

Last week, Kirk posted on X images of news clips showing his visit was sparking controversy. He wrote, “What’s going on in Utah?”
