We are midway through September and there’s one week left of summer. It has been another week of news in Hudson County, and we’ve got all the headlines to get you caught up, as we do every week, from all around the internet. Among the local news: the Hoboken Fall Arts + Music Festival is happening on 9/28; a new Indian restaurant is opening in Jersey City; and a judge halts market-rate leasing in Hoboken until affordable housing is added. No Service from Harrison to Journal Square PATH Stations on Several Weekends Starting 9/13

Starting Saturday, September 13th, train service between the Harrison and Journal Square stations will shut down for scheduled maintenance. This will be the start of several planned closures, happening on select weekends until November 2nd. Click here for more.

Barry’s Bootcamp Opening in Hoboken on 9/20

Barry’s Bootcamp announced in fall 2024 that the international gym franchise is opening a Hoboken, New Jersey location. Signage was up as of January 2025, and now we know that Barry’s will make its Mile Square debut on Saturday, September 20th. Click here for more.

NJDEP to Begin Construction on Washington + 14th Streets in Hoboken

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has announced the next phase in its Rebuild by Design. Per a Nixle alert, the Hudson River project will move to Washington Street and 14th Street on or about Monday, September 15th. This phase of work requires a full closure of the sidewalk and parking lane on the west side of Washington Street between 14th Street and the alleyway south of 15th Street. Work will take place between the hours of 8AM and 6PM Monday through Friday for the duration of the project. This phase of the project is anticipated to last approximately four months.  

Italian Restaurant, The Sicilian Guy, Relocates from Bayonne to Jersey City

Hudson County-born Italian eatery, The Sicilian Guy, has soft-opened in the former International Bagel + Cafe space at 211 Newark Avenue in Jersey City. The Sicilian Guy was formerly located in Bayonne at 1026 Avenue C. Click here for more.

Water Main Breaks on Newark + Garden in Hoboken

Around 10:30AM on Tuesday, September 9th, Hoboken residents reported a water issue at the intersection of Newark Avenue and Garden Street. Water utility provider Veolia confirmed the issue in a tweet, saying that crews were performing emergency maintenance on a 12″ water main. As of 7:30AM on Thursday, September 11th, the boil water advisory was lifted. Per a Nixle alert from the City of Hoboken, “Repairs have been completed, and subsequent water quality testing shows the water quality meets all regulatory standards. THE BOIL WATER ADVISORY IS LIFTED and it is no longer necessary to boil your water before consumption.” Click here for more.

Pure Green to Open in Hoboken 

 

Pure Green announced via Instagram that it’s opening on Saturday, September 20th at 519 Washington Street in Hoboken. There will be promotions, giveaways, and raffles going on from 10AM-2PM.

Sephora to Give Away Beauty Masks at Newport Centre Mall

Sephora is giving away 700 Sephora Collection masks to Hoboken and Jersey City residents. The giveaway is taking place at the Newport Centre Mall location from September 13th-19th while supplies last.

Springbone Kitchen Opening on Washington Street in Hoboken 

 

The Hoboken Girl can confirm that a location of the popular health food chain Springbone Kitchen is coming to Hoboken in early 2026. A representative from the company confirmed the brand’s plans to come to Hoboken, and its new address, at 506 Washington Street. The restaurant will open in the former Bon Banh space. Hoboken Fall Arts + Music Festival Happening on 9/28

The annual Hoboken Fall Arts & Music Festival is taking place on September 28th from 11AM to 6PM on Washington Street, between Observer Highway and Seventh Street. The event will feature live musical performances on two stages, a variety of eateries, and over 300 artists, makers, crafters, and vendors. Per a City of Hoboken press release, this year, Toronto-based band Dwayne Gretzky will headline the Observer Highway stage, performing the classic hits of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s. The lineup will also feature returning favorites and some new acts, including the cast of Broadway’s The Great Gatsby, who will open the Observer Stage with a tap number from the opening of the Tony award-winning Broadway show. New Indian Restaurant to Open in Jersey City

The team behind Southern Indian eatery, Dosa Spot, will launch a new restaurant called Bangalore Kitchen in Jersey City’s Newport neighborhood. Per Jersey Digs, temporary signage has gone up at 126 River Drive in the old Loradella’s space that shuttered earlier this year. Dosa Spot, which started as a food truck, launched in 2022 inside Newport Centre Mall.

Psycho Mike’s in Hoboken Changes Name to Pig and Parrot Last Resort

 

The team behind Pig + Parrot in Hoboken changed the name of its bar, restaurant, and live music joint Psycho Mike’s Therapy Bar. It is now called Pig and Parrot Last Resort. This marks the team’s third Pig and Parrot location. There are currently two locations in Hoboken, 125 Washington Street and 77 Hudson Street, and one location in Brielle, NJ, at 201 Union Lane.

Judge Halts Market-Rate Leasing in Hoboken Until Affordable Housing Added

A decade-long lawsuit between a housing advocacy group and the owners of four Hoboken apartment buildings has been resolved. The lawsuit alleged that the developers did not comply with Hoboken’s Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance, requiring 10% of a residential building’s units to be designated as affordable housing. A total of 56 units will now be set aside as affordable housing units across three Hoboken apartment buildings. Click here for more.

Updates on Whole Foods Daily Market Coming to Downtown Hoboken

A new Whole Foods concept is coming to Hoboken. 101-105 Washington Street in downtown Hoboken will become a new Whole Foods Daily Market location, according to materials filed by the Whole Foods Team. We first reported on the news back in March, and as of September 2025, a “coming soon” sign is up in the space. Click here for more.

Why Are Sinkholes Happening in Hoboken?

Just this week, a water main break on Newark and Garden in Hoboken turned into a sinkhole, which is still being repaired. On June 14th, 2024, another sinkhole opened up in Hoboken on Sinatra Drive along the waterfront. While it wasn’t big enough to stop traffic, the opening was larger than your average pothole. It raises some questions about why this keeps happening in the Mile Square City. Click here for more.

Pizzeria on Pine Soft Opens in Bergen-Lafayette in Jersey City

The Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood welcomed a new spot called Pizzeria on Pine at 196 Pine Street. The spot soft opened in Jersey City on September 11th. Click here for more.

Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Captain Completes FBI National Academy

On September 4th, Captain Javier Toro, commander of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Per a Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office press release, he is among the 254 law enforcement officers from 20 countries who completed the 10-week program that focuses on training in advanced communication, leadership, and physical fitness.

Citi Bike Rolls Out Dock Expansion in Jersey City

A 25-dock expansion of Citi Bike is coming to Communipaw Avenue in Jersey City. Lyft, which operates the Citi Bike program, hopes better dock placement this time around will boost ridership. Per the Jersey City Times, a stated goal of the expansion, which was underwritten by a grant from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, is to give an estimated 70,000 south side residents greater access to Citi Bikes and the Port Liberté Ferry Terminal, where commuters can sail across the Hudson River to lower Manhattan.

Hoboken Launches Washington Street Bench Survey

The City of Hoboken and the Hoboken Business Alliance launched an online survey on September 11th seeking the public’s input on new potential street furniture on Washington Street. Hoboken community members can provide feedback on what style of benches they would like installed and suggest potential locations for bench placement via the survey which can be found here. The survey is scheduled to close on Thursday, September 25th at 7PM. Survey results will be used to guide future street furniture installations on Washington Street through a partnership with the Hoboken Business Alliance as outlined in its Streetscape Plan.  

Flotsam River Circus Comes to Hoboken

On September 9th, the Flotsam River Circus took over the Hoboken waterfront. This traveling troupe of musicians, aerialists, and other performers stopped in Hoboken as part of its summer 2025 tour alongside the Hudson River. Click here for more.

Hoboken to Host Public Meeting on Use of CDBG Funds 

Hoboken announced via a Nixle alert a public meeting to be held on September 16th at 6PM in the ground-floor conference room of City Hall, 94 Washington Street, for the community to share feedback on Hoboken’s progress in utilizing funds from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. To remain eligible for these funds, Hoboken must prepare and make available the Program Year 2024 Consolidated Annual Performance Evaluation Report (CAPER). Residents are encouraged to review the draft CAPER and provide input during the public comment period, which ends on September 22nd. The draft report is available here.

Netflix Film, Best of the Best, Films in Bayonne

A new Netflix feature film, titled Best of the Best, was filmed in Bayonne on September 10th. As per a Facebook post, filming took place on the east side of Broadway East, between 41st Street and East 45th Street, the north side of East 42nd Street, between Broadway + Avenue East, and the south side of East 43rd Street, between Broadway and Avenue East. The film stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan from Never Have I Ever, Priyanka Kedia from Everything To Me, and Hasan Minhaj from Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj. According to Tundum, Best of the Best will follow the story of “two childhood best friends…who join their college’s competitive Bollywood dance team only to discover that the road to winning the national championship is far more raucous and cutthroat than they ever imagined.” Click here for more.

The Spaghetti Dinner Block Party, a beloved annual Hoboken tradition, celebrated its 20th anniversary on September 9th. For decades, the event has brought together Hoboken residents of all ages to share a meal right in their own neighborhood. Click here for more.

Jersey City Woman with Breast Cancer to Launch Foundation

Jersey City resident La-Trenda Ross was informed that she had breast cancer late last year. A friend has started a GoFundMe for her, and La-Trenda has decided to start a nonprofit group that has an event set in Hoboken for next month. Per the Hudson County View, she is also going to use a portion of the proceeds to start the R.E.L.L.E Legacy Foundation, dedicated to providing financial and emotional support to individuals affected by breast cancer. In partnership with the Taper and Tonic Barbershop, located at 601 Jefferson Street, La-Trenda will be hosting an event called “Brave & Beyond Pink: Together We Rise” on October 25th from 11AM until 2PM.

Hoboken Police Arrest Woman for Child Endangerment

The Hoboken Police Department (HPD) arrested Tyler Wright, 25, on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, following a 13-month investigation into possession of child sexual abuse material. Per a HPD press release, Tyler was found in Massachusetts, where she was living after moving out of Hoboken. On September 8th, Tyler came to Hoboken Police Headquarters, where she was processed on the warrant and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

Updates on Underground Tunnel Looking to Connect NY + NJ

The Gateway Program, with the Hudson Tunnel Project, is the most urgent and largest infrastructure project in the country to date. The goal of the work is twofold: to make the tunnel between the most congested section of the Northeast corridor more reliable while also building a new tunnel that will create two new tracks under the Hudson River. According to an update given in September 2025, the Tonnelle Avenue Project is nearly complete. “HYCC-3 is more than halfway finished, and the HRGS team has completed the first season of work within the cofferdam and is shifting the dam to enable work on a new section of the riverbed,” the Gateway Development Commission shared with HG. After three years in Hoboken, beauty retailer Bluemercury, located at 230 Washington Street, will close its doors for good on Sunday, September 14th. Customers received an email announcing the closure. Click here for more.

Hoboken Council Approves Fee Increase for Recreation Programs

The Hoboken City Council voted at the September 3rd council meeting to approve an ordinance increasing registration fees for city recreation programs to address rising operating costs. Children’s program fees will increase from $25-$75 to $35-$100 for residents and from $35-$100 to $45-$125 for nonresidents. Adult program fees will go up from $40-$100 to $50-$125 for residents and from $60–$100 to $70–$125 for nonresidents. Officials explained that these changes are necessary to keep pace with actual costs while maintaining accessibility.

Hundreds donated blood in Jersey City on September 11th at the Hyatt Regency during the annual Jersey City Police & Fire Memorial Blood Drive. This event honors heroes and remembers the victims of September 11th. 

Hoboken Urby Secures $162M Loan

The Hoboken Urby will receive a large loan to support its development. Per Jersey Digs, BlueGate Partners, on behalf of Urby and Ironstate Holdings, has secured $162 million in construction financing for the Hoboken Urby, a mixed-use residential project at 256 Observer Highway. Construction began on the project earlier this summer. The 16-story development will feature 307 market-rate apartments plus 38 affordable units complemented by 17,425 square feet of retail space that includes a signature café and a 152-space parking garage. City of Hoboken to Launch Vision Zero Automated Enforcement Program

Mayor Ravi Bhalla announced on September 12th the launch of CLEAR, a new Vision Zero initiative that uses automated camera enforcement to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, by reducing illegal parking, and easing traffic congestion along Washington Street for emergency vehicles and commuters. Per a City of Hoboken press release, as part of the rollout, the city will begin a public education campaign to inform residents, commuters, and businesses of the new enforcement procedures. Automated enforcement will officially begin on October 1st.

Hoboken Unique Visitors Spike 10% Over 3 Years

 

The City of Hoboken saw 4.2 million unique visitors this fiscal year, a 10 percent spike over the past three years, according to the Hoboken Business Alliance’s annual economic trend report. 36 percent of visits lasted over two-and-a-half hours, visitors returned to Hoboken five times or more throughout the year, and credit card spending reached over half a billion dollars. Over half of that spending could be broken down into three categories: 30 percent spent on dining and nightlife, 12 percent on groceries, and 11 percent on leisure activities.
