Ella Matta White Suffolk & maternal composite rams

WITH strong lamb prices creating a prime opportunity for producers, Ella Matta is proud to announce its annual ram sale, featuring what is widely considered one of the country’s best selections of White Suffolk genetics.

This is a chance to make a strategic investment in top-tier genetics that directly impacts your bottom line—with the current prices, every extra kilogram of lamb adds significant value.

This year’s offering is a testament to that focus on performance and profitability.

A remarkable 200 of the 220 White Suffolk sale rams rank in Australia’s top 5 percent for the Lamb Eating Quality (LEQ) index, with the remaining 20 in the top 10pc.

Ella Matta is unique in Australia in being able to offer this number of rams that are ranked this high on index.

The average Terminal Carcase Production (TCP) index for the sale rams is also in the top 5pc nationally, with every single ram ranking in the top 20pc.

“Our first 200 rams are now in the top 5 percent in Australia,” Jamie Heinrich of Ella Matta said.

“This is a fantastic achievement and a great opportunity for our clients to capitalize on.

“We are particularly proud that our clients will be able to buy stud-level genetics at flock ram prices, all the way through the sale.”

The rams’ unmatched performance extends to key traits, with average growth (WWT & PWT) and muscle (PEMD) ranking in the top 10 percent, while lambing ease, marbling (IMF), and lean meat yield all average in the top 20 percent.

In addition to the White Suffolks, Ella Matta is proud to offer a robust selection of Poll Merinos, bred for the modern Merino market.

These sheep feature excellent fat, muscle, and growth while maintaining a fine 17-18 micron wool.

The Poll Merinos are also low maintenance, have high weaning rates, are plain-bodied, and produce high quality wool with above average fleece weights.

Alex McGorman of Thornby, one of the state’s largest feedlots, emphasised the advantages of this, stating, “we favour the modern Merino over the traditional Merino type as a better option for our feedlot; they perform a lot better.”

The sale’s maternal composites have also seen significant improvement.

“All our maternal’s rank in the top 10percent in Australia for the main maternal index MCP+, with three-quarters of them in the top 5 percent,” Jamie Heinrich said.

This is a testament to their improved growth and muscle while still maintaining a low adult weight to maximize production per ewe and allow for higher stocking rates per hectare.

To accommodate demand and ensure everyone has a chance to select what they need, Ella Matta has increased its offering this year.

  • 63 Maternal Composites, an increase of 23
  • 20 Wool Maternals
