Officers responded to a 911 call for an assault at the Seagate Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Coney Island around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. That’s when police say they found an 89-year-old woman with head trauma who was bleeding heavily.
She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died, officials said.
“Where [were] the staff? They were supposed to be watched all the time, especially if they [had] dementia or Alzheimer’s. Those people are supposed to be watched 24/7,” Kovalyoe said.
Police say the victim was possibly struck on the head with a metal object.
According to sources, the person who assaulted her is a 95-year-old woman who suffers from dementia.
“Anything can be used as a weapon and these people do represent a threat to their own health and others,” Anna, a Brooklyn resident who didn’t want to provide her last name, said.
Sources tell NY1 the 95-year-old was taken to Coney Island Hospital for a psychological evaluation and that charges are still pending.
Anna, whose mother also suffers from dementia, said there needs to be more supervision for elderly people suffering from cognitive decline.
“As awful as it is, I hope somebody will listen and make some positive decisions to help resolve the issue,” she said.
According to police, the homicide squad is currently investigating.
NY1 has reached out to the nursing home for comment but has not heard back yet.
