Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod agreed to join Jamahl Mosley’s Orlando Magic staff as an assistant coach back in early July.

An assistant leaving an NBA franchise might not normally attract much attention, but Shammgod had built a relationship with star players like Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic prior to him being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

On the podcast, Shammgod opened up on his exit from Dallas.

“Where we come from if you handle things the wrong way on the way out, things can get ugly. Things can get dark. The people that survive are the people that handle things accordingly. We might not agree, but if you handle things accordingly, we can always come back and be friends. The thing about Dallas is that it was just getting spooky,” Shammgod said.

The former Mavs assistant went on to defend former Maverick Luka Doncic.

“When the game was the biggest and the brightest, [Luka Doncic] was never a passenger. He was always a driver. For me it’s Jordan, Kobe, Luka when it comes to the ”it” factor,” Shammgod said.
