Man accused of murder after shooting girlfriend’s father, who tried to break up fight between couple: JSO

  • September 16, 2025

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 24-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge after the man he shot, who was his girlfriend’s father, died a little over one week ago, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

JSO said Dontay Taylor was originally arrested on Aug. 25 after its detectives learned that he had shot Derrick Griffin, 50, while Griffin was attempting to break up a fight between Taylor and his daughter, who were in a relationship at the time.

Police said Griffin died from his injuries on Sept. 7.

“Taylor was already behind bars in the Duval County jail when detectives arrested him for murder. He’ll continue to be held in jail,” JSO said. “We’ll continue to work this case with our partners at the State Attorney’s Office to make sure justice is served for Griffin’s family and friends.

On Aug. 7, police said they were called to a home on Ahmad Drive North in the Magnolia Gardens area around 6:30 p.m. after a report that someone had been shot.

The man, later identified as Griffin, was taken to a hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his chest and leg.

Police said they learned that Griffin was trying to stop a domestic violence incident between his daughter and Taylor, who then fired multiple shots at Griffin before running off in an unknown direction.

If you or someone you know has been the victim of domestic violence, free, confidential support is available 24/7 through Hubbard House’s Hotline at 904-354-3114 and Text line at 904-210-3698.
