Bodycam videos show brief shootout that injured Phoenix police officers

  • September 17, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Phoenix police released on Tuesday edited bodycam videos that show a short shootout between a suspect and officers earlier this month that left two officers hurt.

The first video is from the perspective of the first injured officer as he and other officers surrounded a home in the area of 17th Avenue and Tonto Street, north of Buckeye Road, on Sept. 2, just after 11:30 p.m.

Phoenix police released edited bodycam video from two officers that showed a brief shootout between officers and the suspect in Phoenix earlier this month.

“Phoenix Police Task Force,” an officer can be heard yelling. “Open the door!” said another. “Search warrant!” yelled an officer.

Officers are seen breaking windows of the home as another used a small battering ram to break down the door.

Because of the officer’s hands and rifle, it’s hard to see what’s happening but gunshots rang out between the suspect, who has not been released, and the police. “Ah, I’m shot,” said the officer.

The second bodycam video that was released was from the officer who returned fire. The officer’s rifle is in the way of the camera but the door is slightly open when the suspect shot his gun at least five times, police said.

The officer backed up in the video and fired his rifle three times. “Everybody good?” yelled an officer in the distance.

The officer fired another shot and yelled, “998!” That’s the police code for an officer-involved shooting. The video then fades to black.

The officer who was shot and another officer who got hurt in the incident were taken to the hospital and later released.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and is still receiving treatment, police said. When he’s released, he’ll be booked into jail, investigators said. A woman on the scene of the shooting said he is her 22-year-old grandson.

Police said they found a handgun used by the suspect.

The officer who opened fire is assigned to the Special Assignments Unit and has more than 17 years of experience with Phoenix police.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
