Staten Island’s oyster legacy runs deep—especially in Rossville’s Sandy Ground, the oldest continuously inhabited free Black settlement in the U.S. In the 1800s, skilled oystermen from Maryland built thriving businesses off Prince’s Bay, making oysters a vital part of the borough’s maritime and cultural history.
