SAN ANTONIO — One of the big stories we’re following is the continued fallout here locally over comments made related to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The consequences of speaking out against Kirk are being seen across the country and here at home. Last week, Governor Greg Abbott went on X, calling out an alleged Seguin ISD teacher’s anti-Kirk post.
Abbott says she’s among a growing list of people being investigated by the Texas Education Agency for anti-Kirk social media posts. It has many questioning the boundaries of free speech and what is protected under the Constitution.

Last week members of the community gathered for the 13th annual A Conversation with the Constitution.
One author and educator who attended the discussion says the fallout is diminishing the Constitution. Christopher Phillips believes the problem is amplified because people are having disagreements on social media instead of having face-to-face discussions.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas is weighing in on the debate urging Texas leaders and schools to uphold democratic values while doing so in a respectful dialogue.
In a statement sent to us, the agency says, “The growing pattern of disciplinary responses to speech across Texas including suspensions, firings and institutional investigations is a threat to democracy.”
We are working to get answers on this still developing story including gathering more information on the reported 180 to 280 cases the TEA is investigating.
We are waiting to learn the names of the teachers and their districts. We’re working to learn the nature of their comments and where they were made for example, were they during class or on their personal social media accounts?
Could disciplined teachers have any legal recourse?
We’re also working to learn what government entities and private companies are facing similar challenges.
We will continue to work to get answers on this story and others. We’ll be here every week to let you know what we find out.
