A man was taken to hospital with serious injuries Sunday morning after a single-vehicle crash that closed part of Norwell Drive in Nanaimo for several hours.

RCMP say the collision happened near the intersection of 105th Street and Norwell Drive, just behind Country Club Mall.

Witnesses said a white van appeared to be involved and damaged in the crash, which caused a five-hour road closure as investigators worked at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved and police say only minor property damage occurred in the area.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue says four units, including two engines and a rescue truck, were dispatched to the scene following the initial call at 5:19 a.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
