A school resource officer has been hospitalized after being shot multiple times in an incident that, officials said, happened in Philadelphia’s Penn’s Landing section early Sunday.
According to police, the incident happened at about 1:45 a.m., when police responded to a report of a shooting to find a school resource officer — who police have not yet provided further identifying information on — after he had been shot multiple times inside a school safety patrol vehicle along the 300 block of Columbus Boulevard.
Officials said that the victim was just finishing his shift at a nearby school when he was flagged down by the driver of a truck who had just exited I-95 onto Columbus Boulevard.
The driver, officials said, told the officer that he was involved in a road rage incident with the driver of a white Hyundai who pointed a gun at him.
As the officer and the victim were talking, the white Hyundai driven by the armed man pulled up to the scene and the driver opened fire on the officer, according to police.
The officer, police said, was shot in the face, body and arm. He has been taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, officials said.
The victim, officials said, is believed to be a retired Philadelphia police officer who is in his 50s or 60s.
After the shooting, officials said, the white Hyundai sped away and police are currently seeking that vehicle.
