The Department of the Navy (DON) will host a signing ceremony with Western Area Power Administration (Western) and Sempra U.S. Gas & Power, a leading U.S. renewable energy developer, to celebrate the largest renewable energy purchase by a federal entity. The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m., Aug. 20 at Naval Base Coronado, and is scheduled to feature remarks by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus; Sempra U.S. Gas & Power President and CEO Patti Wagner; and Western Senior Vice President and Desert Southwest Regional Manager Ronald Moulton.
In September 2014, Western issued a request for proposal on behalf of the Department of the Navy to enter into an agreement for off-base renewable energy generation to power a portion of 14 Naval installations, including Naval Base Coronado. The solar facility will be located in Arizona and have a maximum capacity of 210 megawatts (MW) direct current (DC) or 150 MW alternating current (AC), which will provide a third of the power to the 14 Navy and Marine Corps installations in California.
