SAN ANTONIO – The man who was shot several times by a San Antonio police officer was arrested again. This time on an ‘at large’ warrant from nearly one year ago.

Online court records indicate the now 20-year-old Erik Cantu was arrested on a misdemeanor ‘assault causing bodily injury’ charge. Records we’ve obtained show the arrest was in connection with an incident that occurred last September. That case was filed at large, which explains the lengthy delay in his arrest.

According to warrant, Cantu is accused of hitting, pushing, and kicking a woman during at a party. It goes on to say she was bleeding, had trouble breathing and to be taken to hospital.

Erik Cantu was shot by now former SAPD officer James Brennand back in 2022. Cantu was 17 years old at the time. Brennand was criminally charged and indefinitely suspended following the shooting. Brennand’s trial is slated to begin next month following a delay. Brennand faces charges of aggravated assault by a public servant.

Cantu was sitting in his vehicle at a North Side McDonald’s parking lot eating a hamburger when Brennand approached the vehicle, opened the driver door and ordered Cantu out of the car. In the officer’s body camera video, Cantu looked back at Brennand while holding the hamburger, then backed his car away, hitting the officer with the door. Brennand opened fire several times as the door closed and Cantu drove away.

Cantu was shot multiple times and put on life support for six weeks sustaining injuries to his stomach, liver, diaphragm, lungs and arms. He spent nearly two months recovering.

Since his recovery, Cantu has been arrested three times and charged with evading arrest twice, theft and failure to give information. Cantu was granted probation for seven years, given 200 hours of community service and his driver’s license was suspended for two years.
