At tonight’s Ballon d’Or Awards, Viktor Gyokeres has received the Gerd Muller Trophy for his sensational campaign for club and country in 2024/25.
Previously known as Striker of the Year or Best Striker Award, the prize has been awarded since 2021 to the highest-scoring player from the previous season, taking into account goals scored for both European clubs and national teams.
Viktor, playing for Sporting Lisbon and Sweden, netted a remarkable 54 goals in just 52 matches to top the scoring charts across the continent. Those goals helped Sporting win the Primeira Liga and Taca de Portugal, and saw him finish as the top scorer in the 2024/25 Nations League.
Last year’s winners were Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane, who netted 52 goals each in 2024 for their respective clubs and countries. Erling Haaland was the recipient in 2023 with 56, while Robert Lewandowski the victor in both 2021 and 2022, with an incredible 69 and 57 in those campaigns respectively.
