There are nearly 173,000 Latter-day Saints, also known as Mormons, in over 270 congregations in Florida, according to a news release.

The four other temples that are announced, under construction or in operation in Florida are the Fort Lauderdale Temple, Orlando Temple, Tallahassee Temple and the Tampa Temple.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints explains the difference between a temple and a church on its website.

Latter-day Saints believe that temples are the most sacred places on Earth and differ from churches, which are designated for public weekly worship services.
