Forget potholes. Detroit’s latest hazard has teeth.
Officials at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources confirmed social media rumors that, yes, a small alligator has been spotted on Belle Isle.
Staff at Belle Isle Park responded to a possible alligator sighting on Friday, Sept. 26, according to the DNR. Park staff have yet to see the alligator themselves, but they did review a civilian photograph and used geolocation data to determine that the report is “credible and consistent.”
A photo of the alligator circulating on social media has drawn thousands of interactions, with some users estimating the reptile to be two or three feet long.
But with social media fervor comes rumors. As well as reports of a loose alligator, some users reported that a boa constrictor was slithering around Belle Isle, too.

“We are aware of social media rumors regarding a boa constrictor sighting,” a DNR spokesperson said in an email to the Free Press. “There is no evidence to support this claim, and no such report has been received or verified by park staff or DNR personnel.”
With the possibility of a boa constrictor off the table, the DNR said it is assessing the park and determining the next steps to handle the alligator. In the meantime, the department warned visitors against approaching any wild animal, regardless of its size. Even though the alligator is believed to be small, “all wildlife can be dangerous and unpredictable,” the agency said.
It is unclear how the alligator got to Belle Isle, but officials emphasized that releasing wild animals or pets into State Parks like Belle Isle is illegal and harmful to the animal, the ecosystem and public safety.
Sightings should be directed to the DNR’s poaching hotline at (800) 292-7800.
