There is a lot of pressure on players to continue winning after claiming their first-ever title.

Rising American star Learner Tien was looking to win his first ATP title at the China Open after beating the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Lorenzo Musetti and Francisco Cerundolo.

However, that was not to be the case, with Tien beaten by Jannik Sinner in the China Open final.

Tien may not have been able to win his first title yet, but another American teenager on the WTA Tour did, but things have not gone so well for her since then.

Last month, 17-year-old Iva Jovic won the Guadalajara Open, which is a WTA 500-level tournament, after beating Emiliana Arango in the final.

This did not come as a surprise to some, with Jovic being widely spoken about by the likes of Coco Gauff as an up-and-coming American talent for some time.

As a result of her triumph, she was rewarded with a career-high ranking of world number 36, with Jovic backed to go even higher next year.

However, it has not been so much of a successful time for Jovic since then, starting at the China Open, where she was actually one of the seeded players.

In her only match at the Beijing tournament, Jovic lost to German Eva Lys in three sets, despite having a 5-2 lead in the decider.

Lys has since reached the quarterfinals of the China Open, so in hindsight this loss does not appear to be too much to fret about.

Despite making a big jump up the rankings after her Guadalajara victory, Jovic did not want to just sit on the sidelines and decided to play a lower-level WTA 125 tournament in Suzhou, China.

Jovic was the top seed at this event, but lost in the first round after being beaten in straight sets by world number 146, Lulu Sun.

The disparity in their rankings makes this look like a very poor defeat for Jovic, but Sun is a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist and has found some form recently after winning a different WTA 125 event in Jingshan, China.

What is next for Iva Jovic after her latest defeat?

Despite the recent defeats, it has still been a huge breakout season for Jovic, who began the year ranked at world number 191.

This ranking rise has been as a result of playing all four Grand Slams for the first time in one season, and winning titles at the Guadalajara Open and a WTA 125 event on the grass of Ilkley.

Jovic will now look to continue rising up the rankings, as she looks to become seeded for the Australian Open next year.

The 17-year-old has 191 ranking points to defend until the 2026 season, with Jovic winning two ITF titles this time last year.

Jovic’s next tournament will be the Wuhan Open, but as the entry list came out before she won the Guadalajara Open, the world number 37 will actually have to play in the qualifying draw unless she receives a wildcard.

She is also entered into a WTA 250 tournament in Osaka, where Naomi Osaka is set to be the top seed.
